RESOLUTION NO. 2003 – 02

  Urging Western States to Save Energy

(Urges Western State Legislatures to Create a Link to DOE’s website and To Lead By Example in Saving Energy With a Focus on Natural Gas)

Introduced by the Energy & Public Lands Committee

WHEREAS, the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Energy Information Administration (EIA) has indicated that the nation’s stocks of natural gas in underground storage are unusually low due to weather factors and increased demand; and

WHEREAS, the industry is already responding by increasing storage rates, marked lately by record storage injections; and

WHEREAS, there are only limited opportunities to increase supply over the next 12 to 18 months; we must emphasize, therefore, energy efficiency and smart energy use; and

WHEREAS, the Bush administration is also looking for ways to lead by example in saving energy and, in particular, natural gas at our country’s facilities; and

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of State Governments-WEST (CSG-WEST) commends the DOE for creating a user-friendly website:  www.energysavers.gov,  which will provide ratepayers of this country with valuable tips on how they can save energy and money;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that CSG-WEST encourages state governments to look for ways to lead by example in saving energy and, in particular, natural gas at their government facilities; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that CSG-WEST requests each member’s assistance in distributing this important information to the residents of their communities,  which will help our nation as it confronts potential natural gas price and supply issues.

  Adopted by the CSG-WEST Executive Committee on August 1, 2003
Assembled in Annual Meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii.
