Made up of the nonpartisan legislative staff directors of the West, the committee is dedicated to finding ways to deliver the best possible customer service to lawmakers in a positive and professional workplace environment. Western staff leaders convene each year for a training and professional development seminar.

2009 Highlights:

Western legislative service agency and research directors met jointly with their Southern counterparts November 11-13, 2009 in La Quinta, California. Pam Varni, Executive Director Alaska Legislative Affairs Agency, and Jerry Bassett, director of the Alabama Legislative Reference Service, presided. The joint Fall Training Seminar offered management training in workplace communications with Seattle-based trainer Rhonda Hilyer, president of Agreement Dynamics. Boston-based Andrew Matz, vice president and associate general counsel of Reed Elsevier, Inc., discussed legal aspects of managing the 21^st century workplace. Washington Senate Counsel Mike Hoover reviewed social networking pitfalls in the legislative environment in his “To Tweet or Not to Tweet” presentation.
