Western Legislative Academy

Helping Legislators Become More Effective
and
Building Stronger State Legislative Institutions

November 5-8, 2007
Colorado Springs, Colorado

More information about the 2007 WLA will be available soon.

Each year CSG-WEST conducts a professional development training program for a select group of western state legislators in their first four years of service. The goals of the Western Legislative Academy (WLA) are to help newer legislators become more effective and to build stronger state legislative institutions. To that end, the WLA brings together a faculty of outstanding academics, nationally known corporate and public trainers to work with a small class of lawmakers who come from each of our 13 western states. Members of the Academy are selected on the basis of their dedication to public service, desire to improve personal legislative effectiveness and commitment to the institution of the legislature.

Created in 2000 in response to rapid turnover in legislatures because of term limits and natural attrition, the Academy is proud to claim 263 legislators from the 13 western states as alumni.  Most Academy training takes place in the historic Penrose House at the El Pomar Foundation retreat center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  Now planning our seventh WLA, the CSG-WEST Executive Committee will consider applications for the 39 seats available in the WLA Class of 2007.
