Traditionally, states have looked to the health care system as a key driver when seeking to improve health care outcomes and equity. More recent studies have indicated, however, that sustained improvements require a more holistic approach addressing social, economic, and environmental factors that influence a person’s health. During this session, presentations by a western state and a local western county will share their experiences in redesigning health care delivery by including social determinants such as education level, social supports, and income need to be considered in order to provide more comprehensive care for patients.

As western state economies change, states continue to seek ways to improve basic education outcomes and give students hands on employer experience to ensure the kind of skilled workforce needed to provide economic growth. Effective career technical education (CTE) has been shown to improve basic education results and provide the talent pipeline required for a successful private sector. Additionally, states are searching for revenue models able to sustain long-term education funding to avoid year to year funding crises. Through roundtable discussions, members will engage with topic experts to identify necessary components for an effective CTE program, and what options states can explore to secure sustainable long-term education funding.
